configuration of Cisco Wireless router

Steps to configure Cisco Wireless router
Configuring Cisco wireless router includes installing a password, hostname, IP address and subnet mask that gives an idea about behavior and nature of router device. If you are not able to configure Cisco router properly then it can affect speed and also allows unauthorized users to access your network. This can harm your confidential information and also interrupt the communication between two networks. For proper configuration of Cisco wireless router it is also necessary to identify the protocol that is used by the network. This protocol should be supported by the router for proper exchange of information between two networks.
Things to be needed:
  • HyperTerminal
  • Cisco Router
  • Ethernet cables
Steps to be followed

  • The first step is to open the HyperTerminal by approaching the following path: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> HyperTerminal. The main function of HyperTerminal is to configure Cisco brand routers that do not have their own utility configuration. These types of routers are also termed as dumb routers.
  • If you are going to use HyperTerminal for the first time then you have to enter local information like hostname, area code, password and name of your router. It is easy to access all above information for HyperTerminal. In case you are using dial up connection then double click for accessing the information that connects you with the outside world.
  • The next step is to type “Enter privilege mode” command into the text box. This command allows you to set up advance security setting without adding extra password or host name.
  • For opening the basic configuration command line you have to type “Enter Configuration Mode 1” in the text box. This command works only when cursor blinks ready on the computer screen.
  • Before starting configuration you have to enter following line "MyRouter1 (config-if) 1 IP add 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 [Set IP address and subnet mask]." This line sets the IP address and subnet mask for your router. After this step, your IP address is able to communicate with the outside world.
  • For securing configuration of Cisco router type the following line "CiscoRouter1 (config-line) 1 password (  ) #login (  )."  Type some meaningful login name and password that should be difficult to crack by the hackers.
  • Also set the bandwidth of the router and at last click on the save button for saving all the recommended settings.
Some important facts to be consider
Modern Cisco routers are available with automatic configuration utility. In that case, you don’t have to cram all commands explained above. You can easily configure Cisco router by following simple configuration steps. It completes the configuration within few minutes for you. It is also necessary to save the login name and password of the router for future use. If you don’t save the initial settings then you have to configure the router from scratch again.

Login name and password is the important step while you are configuring the Cisco router as it limits the access of your network by the unauthorized user. You can also make the router invisible for outsiders so that you can make your communication secure from unwanted users.
